The Gender Mapping and Benchmarking Report

The Gender Mapping and Benchmarking Report looks at women’s participation, training, career progression and leadership across brewing, distilling and winemaking in Ireland, France, Denmark, Portugal and Ukraine.

Drawing on 191 survey responses, 34 stakeholder interviews and national and European research, it shows that women are already a strong part of the sector’s talent base. However, their representation often reduces as roles gain greater technical authority, ownership and decision-making power.

Why Our Report Matters?

Our report shows why gender equality in brewing, distilling and winemaking is not only about representation, but about ensuring women have clear opportunities to progress into technical, senior and leadership roles. Drawing on evidence from Ireland, France, Denmark, Portugal and Ukraine, we identify the barriers women continue to face, including uneven access to training, informal progression routes and limited mentorship and leadership opportunities.

These findings give the VINTA project a strong evidence base for action. Our report helps identify where targeted training, clearer career pathways and more inclusive workplace practices can make the greatest difference, supporting women’s progression while also responding to the future skills needs of the European drinks sector.
The report creates a clear evidence base for understanding:

• Where women are well represented
• Where progression begins to narrow
• What affects access to training and development
• Which structural and cultural barriers continue to appear
• Where new opportunities are emerging

It also identifies practical priorities for education providers, employers, sector organisations and policymakers.

This report will be especially useful for:

• VET and higher education providers
• Researchers and policymakers
• Sector associations and professional bodies
• Employers reviewing their workforce or progression practices
• Organisations developing equality, skills or training strategies

Use the report to:

• Support a funding, policy or research discussion
• Review existing training and career pathways
• Inform a workplace equality or DEI plan
• Compare experiences across different countries
• Identify where your organisation could focus first
