Yet despite their growing presence, many women still face persistent barriers to progressing into technical and senior roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What the Evidence Shows<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research from the <strong>European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE)<\/strong> highlights ongoing gender gaps across the EU labour market, including in employment, leadership and decision-making roles. Women remain less represented in senior and technical positions, a trend that holds true in male-dominated industries such as manufacturing and production \u2014 categories that include much of the drinks sector.<br>(EIGE Gender Equality Index, 2024)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the beverage alcohol industries specifically, sector surveys show that many women experience barriers related to workplace culture, lack of clear progression pathways, and limited access to technical training. A study by <strong>Women of the Vine &amp; Spirits<\/strong> found that only a small proportion of women believe the industry has made significant progress on equality, with many reporting challenges in career advancement and visibility.<br>(Women of the Vine &amp; Spirits industry research, 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How These Challenges Affect the Drinks Industry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, these patterns often emerge as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Underrepresentation in technical roles<\/strong> such as brewers, distillers or lead winemakers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fewer women in leadership and decision-making positions<\/strong>, even where women are well represented at entry levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited access to hands-on, technical training<\/strong> and clear routes for career progression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Workplace cultures and recruitment practices<\/strong> that have not always supported inclusion or flexible pathways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These issues not only affect women\u2019s careers \u2014 they also constrain businesses. As the drinks industry adapts to skills shortages, sustainability demands and market change, it benefits from a broader pool of talent, perspectives and expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Change Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting women to progress isn\u2019t only a matter of fairness. A growing body of research shows that diverse teams and inclusive workplaces improve innovation, decision-making and business resilience. When women have access to training, mentoring and leadership opportunities, the whole sector gains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stronger talent pipelines<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Greater retention of skilled workers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More resilient and adaptive businesses<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wider participation in innovation and sustainability practices<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Projects Like VINTA Help<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initiatives such as <strong>VINTA<\/strong> are designed to address these very gaps. By combining:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>industry-led research<\/strong> that identifies barriers and good practice,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>practical vocational training and open educational resources<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>digital learning pathways for flexible access<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>inclusive workplace tools for employers<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>VINTA supports women to build technical skills, confidence and leadership capacity.
